Kiana Sail and Dive

Business Overview

History

Kiana is 60ft (18m) steel cutter rigged ketch. Based on a design by John Pugh, Kiana was constructed from the ground up to commercial survey standards and is currently in 1B, 1C and 1D survey.

First launched in 1990 Kiana originally operated in South East Queensland before relocating to the Whitsundays in 1995.

The current owners purchased Kiana from the original owner/builder in 2003.

Current Operations

Kiana currently operates from Abell Point Marina in Airlie Beach. The owner employees a crew of three (Skipper, Dive Instructor, Deckhand/cook) and operates 3 day 2 night Sail and Dive tours for 14 guests to the Whitsunday Islands and Bait Reef on the outer Great Barrier Reef.

Kiana runs two tours per week, departing on Monday and Friday and returning Wednesday and Sunday respectively.

Whitsundays Sailing Adventures

Kiana Sail and Dive is a founding member of Whitsundays Sailing Adventures (see Whitsundays Sailing Adventures.com), a cooperative of charter boat owners that provides marketing, reservation and billing services to its members.

The new owner of Kiana Sail and Dive would be eligable to membership of WSA and a seat on the board as a director..

Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority Permits

Included with the business are two GBRMPA Permits. The first of these is the permit to carry out charter vessel operation in the GBRMPA Whitsundays Planning Area. The second is the permit to operate a mooring at Bait Reef.

Both of these permits are important because no new permits are being issued. The mooring permit at Bait Reef is particularly sought after as there are only a very limited number of private mooring permits at Bait Reef (a current GBRMPA search show only two).

State Park Permit

Also included with the business is a "Commercial Activities Permit' to allow Kiana's guests to visit the Hill Inlet look-out on Whitsunday Island.
